What is Angina?

Angina occurs when the coronary arteries which supply blood to the heart become narrow and cannot carry sufficient blood to the heart to meet the extra demands placed upon it during exertion or excitement.

Recognition

1. Casualty complains of a vice-like grip pain in the chest which can spread to the jaw and down one or both arms

2. Pain eases with rest

3. Shortness of breath

4. Sudden and often extreme weakness

5. Feeling anxious

Treatment

1. Help casualty to sit and reassure them

2. Assist them to take any medication they may have

3. If pain persists or returns suspect a heart attack

4. If it is the first instance that the casualty has suffered an angina attack remove to hospital.
